A 3-ton chiller van tops out around 12 pallets; once a route regularly needs more than that, or the load is heavier per pallet than a van’s payload rating allows, a refrigerated truck is the more efficient choice — one truck run instead of two van trips.

Per-pallet, a truck usually works out cheaper than running the equivalent volume across multiple van trips, once you account for the extra driver time and fuel two van runs would need.
