Why cut flowers need cool transport, not cold transport

Flowers don’t need a freezer, and they don’t need the same aggressive chill as raw meat — they need a stable, gentle 2°C to 8°C that slows respiration without damaging delicate petals.

Most florist and wholesale flower bookings start before sunrise, with a pickup from a flower market or import hub, followed by delivery to retail florists, event venues or direct consumers the same day. Speed matters here almost as much as temperature — flowers lose freshness with every hour outside a controlled environment, so a delayed run costs quality even if the temperature never wavers.

Loading matters too. Boxes of cut flowers don’t tolerate rough handling the way produce crates do, so our drivers on flower routes load and secure stock to avoid crushing or bruising in transit.

What flower delivery actually needs

Pre-dawn market pickup

Dispatched before sunrise to catch flower market opening hours.

Gentle, stable temperature

Held at 2°C to 8°C — cool enough to slow respiration, not so cold it damages petals.

Careful handling

Loading and securing that avoids crushing or bruising delicate stock in transit.

Same-day event delivery

Wedding and event florists get delivery windows built around venue setup times.

Chiller van, not freezer van, for cut flowers

1-ton chiller van covers most florist and retail flower delivery routes — the volume is rarely the constraint, and the gentle chilled range keeps stock fresh without the risk a freezer unit would pose to delicate petals. A single wholesale importer or large event florist moving bulk stock from the airport or a flower market sometimes steps up to the 3-ton chiller van for the added pallet capacity.

Freezer vans and trucks aren’t the right fit for this industry — sub-zero temperatures damage most cut flowers rather than preserving them.
